Touch Screen Test – Test Your Touchscreen Online

Draw on the box below to find dead zones and unresponsive patches, and see how many fingers your screen tracks at once. Cover the whole area, right up to the edges, then check your coverage. It works as a touchscreen test for phones, tablets and touch laptops.

How to test your touch screen online

  1. Take off any screen protector first if you suspect a problem. A badly fitted one is the single most common cause of patchy touch.
  2. Clean the screen and dry your hands. Moisture confuses capacitive screens, and very dry skin registers poorly.
  3. Swipe slowly over the whole box in overlapping strokes, like colouring in. Go right up to all four edges — faults cluster there.
  4. Place several fingers down at once to check multi-touch. The counter shows the most registered at any point.
  5. Press Show coverage. Green is where you were registered, red is where nothing was.

What the results mean

Not working? Fix it

Before anything else
  1. Remove the screen protector. Thick, cheap or lifting protectors block capacitive touch in patches. This is the most common cause by a wide margin and costs nothing to rule out.
  2. Unplug the charger. A faulty or counterfeit charger injects noise into the digitiser and produces jumping, phantom and missed touches. If the problem disappears unplugged, replace the charger.
  3. Clean the screen with a dry microfibre cloth, and dry your hands. Water on the surface registers as touch; greasy fingers register poorly.
  4. Restart the device. A touch layer that has crashed looks exactly like failed hardware and comes back after a restart.
Android phones and tablets
  1. Restart in Safe Mode — hold the power button, then long-press Power Off. If touch works normally there, an installed app is the cause rather than the screen.
  2. Check Settings → Display for a Touch Sensitivity or "Screen protector mode" option and turn it on if you use a protector.
  3. Turn on Developer Options → Show taps and Pointer location to see exactly where the system thinks you are touching.
  4. If the fault followed a drop, the digitiser cable may have unseated even with no visible damage — that is a repair, not a setting.
iPhone and iPad
  1. Force restart: volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. Check Settings → Accessibility → Touch for Touch Accommodations, which can delay or ignore touches and is easy to switch on by accident.
  3. Check 3D & Haptic Touch sensitivity on the same screen if long presses behave oddly.
  4. A "ghost touch" problem that began after a screen replacement usually means a non-genuine digitiser. Apple and reputable repairers will recognise the symptom.
Windows touchscreen laptops
  1. Open Device Manager → Human Interface Devices, find HID-compliant touch screen, disable it, then enable it again.
  2. If it is missing entirely, the touch driver is not loaded — check Windows Update and the manufacturer's support page.
  3. Search for Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input in the Start menu and run the calibration if touches land in the wrong place.
  4. On a convertible, check the device is not stuck in a mode that disables touch — some disable it when a keyboard is attached.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my touch screen online?
Draw across the test area with your finger, covering the whole box including the edges. Gaps in the line show where the screen does not respond, and the page reports how much of the area you covered.
How do I do a multi-touch test?
Put two, three or more fingers on the test area at the same time. The page shows how many touch points your screen is tracking at once.
What is a dead zone on a touch screen?
An area of the screen that no longer registers touch while the rest works normally. It is far more common than a screen failing completely, and it is why 'is my touch screen broken' is the wrong question — the useful answer is where it stopped working. Draw over the whole area above and press Show coverage: anything still red after you have deliberately covered it is a candidate.
A whole strip down one side does not respond.
A fault in a straight line almost always means a broken connection rather than damaged glass. The digitiser is a grid of transparent conductors, and one broken trace disables everything along it. On a phone this often follows a drop, even one that left no visible crack, and sometimes follows a screen replacement where the ribbon cable was not seated properly. It is a repair rather than a setting.
My screen responds in some places but not others, in patches.
Scattered patches usually mean a screen protector rather than the digitiser. A thick or badly fitted protector, particularly one with trapped air or lifted corners, blocks capacitive touch in exactly that uneven way. Take it off and run the test again before assuming anything else. Moisture on the surface and very dry skin both produce similar results.
How many fingers should my screen detect?
Most phones track five, many track ten, and some budget devices only two. The counter above shows the most it has registered at once. Fewer than expected is a hardware limit rather than a fault — but a device that used to manage ten and now manages three has a real problem.
The line jumps or breaks when I draw slowly.
Try it with a different finger and with the device unplugged from its charger. Jumpy tracking while charging is a classic sign of a cheap or faulty charger injecting electrical noise into the digitiser, and it disappears the moment you unplug. If it persists unplugged, the digitiser itself is likely failing.
Does this work on a laptop or with a stylus?
Yes. The test uses pointer events, so a touchscreen laptop, a graphics tablet, an Apple Pencil and an ordinary mouse all register. With a stylus that reports pressure, the line thickness varies as you press harder, which is a quick way to check pressure sensitivity is working.
Is what I draw saved anywhere?
No. Everything is drawn on a canvas inside the page and discarded when you leave or press Clear. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.
Why does the page say not enough covered to judge?
Because an untouched area and a dead area look identical to the test. Until you have covered at least a third of the box, absence of a mark means nothing — so rather than report a dead zone that is really just somewhere you have not been yet, it asks you to keep going.
